Writing Assignment (Proposal)

Writing Assignment

 Course goals

  • Develop effective sentence, paragraph, and essay writing.
  • Write essays in a variety of rhetorical modes.

Write a proposal to solve a problem within a community of which you are a part. The word “community” includes school, work, family life, special-purpose groups, committees, task forces, military units, and sports teams. If you are considering writing about abortion, smoking, gay marriage, gun control, or the death penalty, please keep in mind that those subjects, and others like them, are extensively recognized and argued. Thus, those issues will demand that your essay cover a very wide range of arguments and that your perspective be as fresh and innovative as possible. Those subjects may seem convenient, but they are actually quite challenging. Do, however, choose an important, serious problem, and remember that even if the problem seems personal, good writers can see their subjects in such a way as to reveal significance to all of us. Your essay is expected to clearly state a problem, explain its seriousness, propose a solution, and further to defend that solution by considering the value of alternative solutions. For this essay, you are required to do some, but not extensive, research, citing three sources maximum in MLA style. Your sources must be cited using in-text citations and a Works Cited list at the end of the text.

  • Length of final draft = 4-5 double-spaced pages.
  • Font size = 10-12 point. No decorative typefaces, please.

The purpose of this writing assignment is to help writers address important issues clearly, logically, and imaginatively.
