Women’s History

Feminisim

After reading chapters 5,6 7 and 9, think carefully about the women who formed the first wave of feminism. Do you see similarities among them? The fact that virtually all these women were earlier involved in other social reform movements–especially abolitionism–does not answer the question. Why were they involved in these similar movements? The idea that women finally “got sick of oppression” is simply unbelievable.  All of a sudden in the 19th century in the small country of America a group of women suddenly realized they were unfairly oppressed?  No.  Something changed. The Enlightenment, the American Revolution, the new experience of early American culture spring to mind as some of many possible explanations. In other words, was there a social or cultural or ethnic or class (or whatever you can think of) bond among them? Were there conditions and developments they shared?
