What is Art?

What you need to do is write about “art” and/or comment on the paragraph below. What is your definition of art (besides short for Arthur). Every posting doesn’t have to be a paper prepared as if you were turning it in for credit. It can be a response to another persons definition. Or a response to a response etc. etc. etc. The important thing is that you give reasons for your beliefs and participate in the discussion. There are no right or wrong answers. The assignment is worth 20 points.

One of the biggest differences between the Romantic and the Classical periods is the way that composers were viewed. Even though Mozart was a super genius he was still very much in the working class so he was more like a servant than an artist. His status in society was not much different than a gardener’s. In the Romantic period, starting with Beethoven, musicians were viewed as artists not just blue collar workers. Did musicians change or were they just viewed differently? Did it have anything to do with what motivated musicians to compose or perform? Did that motivation change from the Classical to the Romantic? What does it mean to be an “artist”? How did the aesthetics for art change? What is art? Someone will need to be brave and post their opinion/opinions in the next day or so to get the ball rolling.
