Summary/Response Essay (Multi-Source) Assignment

For this essay, you will either analyze either “Complexities of Choosing an End Game for Dementia” or “The Case for Affirmative Action.”

You must use 3-4 additional articles that you find on your own. Use these additional articlesto support your arguments and thesis in the RESPONSE section.

SUMMARY SECTION:

The summary should:

1 paragraph long (and you are ONLY summarizing the article you are analyzing, i.e. either “Complexities of Choosing and End Game for Dementia” or “The Case for Affirmative Action”

State the author and title of the article

Include “author tags” (according to Smith, as Smith explains, Smith argues, Smith believes…)

Summarize the main ideas of the article

Be sure to provide a few examples that the author gives to support his/her main point

Do not include your opinion here; save it for the response

No quotes (save them for the response section)

THESIS:

What are you going to argue about the article? This should be right at the end of your summary. Make sure your thesis covers all the ideas you are going to discuss in your response.

RESPONSE SECTION:

After the summary will be your response, which is your reaction to what the author argues. However, the response section is not simply saying, “Here’s what I think.” Remember, subjective opinions aren’t enough—avoid saying I think, I feel, in my opinion, or I believe. In the response, you will prove your thesis with additional explanation, ideas, and examples. The examples can come from an analysis of the article itself. You will also use the articles you found on your own to help you support your thesis.

Your response/thesis should include some (but not necessarily all) of the following types of analysis:

Analyzing the effectiveness of the article– you will analyze the main idea, the organization, the logical reasoning of the arguments, the quality of the supporting evidence, and/or the effectiveness of the author’s style, tone, and voice. What kind of appeals (reason? emotion?) does the article use? Do these appeals work? Why or why not? Does the article present any opposing viewpoints? Why or why not? Are the arguments effective? Why or why not?

Agreeing and/or disagreeing with the ideas in the text – here you will react to the ideas in the article. You will explain why you agree or disagree and bring examples for support.

Interpreting and reflecting on the text – you explain key passages and/or examine the assumptions or implications of the ideas in the article.
