In this final week in our unit on sources of social difference, we look at social class. In American society, people often debate the centrality of class in determining not only our identities, but our life experiences. How does class intersect with other areas of our life like marriage, religion, education, immigration, etc?

To explore these questions further, follow these instructions for the extra credit assignment:

1) Visit the New York Times’ ‘Class Matters’ report: http://www.nytimes.com/indexes/2005/05/15/national/class/

2) Start by reading the overview article, ‘Shadowy Lines that Still Divide,’ and explore the interactive tables/data available.

3) Along the lefthand side, click on links for additional content (Days 2 – 11) that focuses on how class impacts various aspects of life. Listen to/view/read the slideshows/articles from at least two different Days (such as those related to “Education” or “Health

4) Using the information you have come across on this page, provide your assessment of the relevance of class in today’s society. You may consider focusing your responses on one or more of the following questions: Is class important in all aspects of life? Or, are there just some aspects of our lives that are more impacted than others. What other areas of life might be impacted by social class that are not mentioned on this page? What causes social class to be structured in the way it is, and how does it change? What is the relationship between class and other sources of social difference we’ve looked at so far?
