Poem Analysis Question
Read the following essay on “The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock.” You will find that while the author is amusing and entertaining, he also presents insight and revealing explanations for how the poem works. Note the technique he uses of setting up question and answer between an officer and a sailor, similar to the dialogs of Plato and Socrates. After studying how Robert Sward presents this analysis of “Prufrock,” your assignment is to select a poem, either one we’ve read as a class or another you have found yourself, and imitate Sward’s style of analysis. Be sure you make it clear in your dialog and narrative what problems of analysis the poem presents and what techniques the author uses to reveal thematic ideas.
