(Cultural dissonance is sort of a “not at home” feeling when in the midst of changing cultural environment. There is no better example of this than those examples illustrated in the book “King Peggy: An American Secretary, Her Royal Destiny, and the Inspiring Story of How She Changed an African Village”. The transition from Africa to an American University and then job in the U.S. as well as the transition back to Africa from the U.S. are excellent examples of cultural dissonance. She had to assimilate with American customs and ideals while struggling to hold on to her own. A specific example of the struggle in changing cultures is on page 16 and 17. It is the dilemma Peggy faces when trying to fulfill the tradition of pouring Gorddon’s gin (when it should be Schnapps but Peggy could only find peppermint schnapps and she didn’t think her mother would like that) every morning. The tradition is to pour it outside the door, but Peggy lived in an apartment, therefore she had to alter her cultural traditions to standards of her new culture.)
