started the first paragraph:
Hello, my name is Grace and I will be your tour guide for the evening. Before we begin with the tour I will tell you a little about my background. I am from Puerto Rico, I moved to the Americas when I was 10; I graduated from Melbourne High School. I have a Phd in art history from the University of Washington and I have been a tour guide at the British Museum for almost 15 years. We will begin our tour with the first and one of my absolute favorite artifacts: “Queen of Heaven”. The Queen of Heaven is Inanna / Ishtar.
Requirements:
PAPER 1: Artifact Paper (due February 4 at the start of class or before)
Write a college-level, typed, proofread, MLA-styled and –formatted paper of 800 – 1000 words on the following:
Pretend you are a docent or a tour guide. You are introducing a group of tourists to an artifact, such as a statue, painting, or work of architecture. The artifact you choose must be from the first two chapters (Introduction or Chapter 1). You may not discuss the Rosetta Stone or Stonehenge. Find out what museum or institution holds or manages the artifact you have chosen, and pretend that you work there. Your tour group has paid dearly for your tour and expects to be enlightened and entertained.
Briefly introduce yourself and let the group know your credentials (make them up), and then introduce your artifact in the form of a thesis statement that points out or explains the artifact’s importance. For example, if your artifact were the Rosetta Stone, you would say something like: “As we enter the next room, you’ll see the Rosetta Stone, the discovery of which enabled Jean-Francois Champollion to decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.” Highlight your thesis statement in some way (e.g., yellow, bold type, underline).
Using the information in the preface and “Before We Begin” as a guide, discuss the artifact’s:
- Text – what it is made of (medium), its outward shape (form), and the subject it describes (content).
- Context – its historical and cultural environment. Discuss the circumstances surrounding its creation. In what time and place did it originate? Why? What function or purpose did its serve? To which of Fiero’s “three needs” (see the preface) did this artifact respond?
- Subtext – its secondary or implied meanings. What conceptual messages are embedded or implied by the text? What does the artifact tell us about the civilization that created it? About its values, beliefs, social structure, etc?
- Discovery – Where and when was it discovered? How and by whom?
Include anything else you find interesting and relevant about the artifact. Be sure to include a final paragraph that concludes your discussion and wraps up your tour. If you choose a piece of literature as your “artifact” for Paper 1, please see me for instructions before you write this paper.
Voice
Because of the nature of this assignment, you may write in the first person (using the pronoun “I”). Your style should be conversational (but free of irrelevant chatter), and you should write in active voice. (Ask me if you do not know the difference between active and passive voice.) The goal of this paper is to convey scholarly information in accessible language. Assume that the audience is composed of your peers.

Follow MLA style for formatting and styling this paper. See me if you have questions about this. Note that MLA calls for double spacing throughout the paper.
Sources and citations
Your paper must include MLA-styled in-text citations and a Works Cited list.The first time you cite from a source, fully introduce that source directly in the sentence. (Ask me about this if you do not know what I am talking about. See MLA, the writing center links, or my Angel posts for how to do this.)
You must use at least three scholarly (preferably peer-reviwed), age-appropriate sources, such as:
- Gloria Fiero’s The Humanistic Tradition or another college-level textbook
- the official museum website for your artifact (for example, if your artifact were the Rosetta Stone, you would use the British Museum’s website)
- an academic journal articles pertinent to your topic (such as the Journal of Renaissance Studies). Avoid consumer magazines, such as National Geographic. Get help from a research librarian, if you need it.
- a scholarly books related to your artifact (books written by a scholar in the field or published by a university press)
You may not use any website other than the museum website for your artifact. Do not use encyclopedias as your sources for this paper. Do not overuse any one source.
Paraphrasing and citing
Do not use direct quotes in this paper. Quoting does not allow me to evaluateyour writing. Instead, you should be using your own words and/or paraphrasing from your sources. Quoted or paraphrased information must be cited. Any source included in your Works Cited list must correspond to an in-text citation, and any in-text citation must have a corresponding entry in the Works Cited list.
Word count
The word count for this paper is 800 – 1000 words. You must note your word count after your last paragraph. The word count does not include your Works Cited list or your heading. If you write fewer than 800 words or you fail to note your word count, I will deduct points from your grade.
Proofreading
If you do not proofread your paper for typos and grammatical and spelling errors, you are bound to lose points. (See rubric in separate file for more information.) If I require you to rewrite your paper, you must do so with the help of the writing center. Rewrites do not receive full credit.
