Discussion about visual arts and architecture

Select a work of visual art, architecture, or literature from either the ancient Greek or Roman periods that interests you and that you believe has influenced our modern and contemporary world. For example, consider the influence of Greek humanism represented in the Doryphoros (c. 440 BCE) by Praxiteles and the photography of Robert Mapplethorpe (1946 – 1989). There is a clear influence of the ideal Greek body on the bodies photographed by Mapplethorpe. Another example is the modern-day baseball stadium, like Yankee Stadium. The architecture of baseball stadiums is influenced by the Roman Colosseum, built 70 – 80 AD, which reportedly accommodated between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators and was designed for their quick and easy entrance and exit to sporting events. • Name or title of the work of art
• The style/movement, or period of time and the date
• The location and cultural origin
• Describe where you can see the influence of the work of art you selected on our modern and contemporary world. What elements (its style, ideas, purpose, principles) can we see reflected in the world today, in art or in other areas, including government, philosophy, social structure, and entertainment?
