In some parts of Ms. Held’s article, I felt like I was reading an old text book from the 1950’s. I can understand talking about how the roles of men and women were different through out history and how the roles of men and women have evolved. What I don’t like are the references to current times and the generalizations that are made about the different genders and the roles we occupy. I don’t accept that society, or at least the male part of it, is keeping me from doing what I want, when or where I want to do it. I take responsibility for my decisions and that includes what I accept and reject. Everyone makes choices. I am not a man, I don’t want to be a man, I don’t want to be thought of as a man. I am a woman. I am equal to a man under the law. I have the right to the same opportunities as any other American citizen, male or female. Now, does that mean that the old man working down at the corner store has to be nice to me? Hell no, and I don’t have to shop there. The truth is that no matter what kind of legislation you pass or what kind of fines you impose for violating equality laws, men and women are different. Maybe the guy treating you badly isn’t doing it because you’re a woman, maybe he is just an asshole. I say reject the idea that your gender makes any difference at all, when it comes to day to day people. However, when it comes to being discriminated against because of your gender, this is when you should take it seriously. Just as Thaddeus Stevens stated, when he addressed congress, regarding the Emancipation Proclamation, “All are equal, under the law”. There comes a time when the victims of sexism, racism, and every other kind of ism out there has to say to their oppressor, “That’s all your problem, it doesn’t have anything to do with me!” As far as this week’s discussion, I didn’t really read anything I have not read or heard before. In fact, we studied the feminist movement when I was in college in 1995. I am not surprised by anything in the class. For me, personally, this is just not my topic. I don’t hate it, it just doesn’t do much for me. There are many other subjects I like a great deal more than philosophy. I suppose a large part of it is growing older and becoming very aware of time and how precious it is, and how little of it is left. When I was in my younger years, philosophy was very interesting to me, but not so much anymore. I have respect for the field and those who do love it, I’m just not one of them. I wish you all much flourishing happiness in the future!
