1.COLLAPSE

One of the main points that Ariely makes talks about the illusion of control people think they they have when it comes to making cognitive decisions. When in reality external factors determine if someone will make a rational or irrational decision. The only example that kind of relates to this is when one of my friends got into a car accident while under the influence. They believed that since they had driven drunk before without wrecking then they would be fine. However, they’re are a lot of external factors that contribute to whither or not someone gets into an accident. On top of that, my friend thought that there are outside factors that influence how his body my react to the alcohol. He thought that just because he had gotten drunk off of liquor before doesn’t mean that his body will react the same way to it. He could of very well gotten alcohol poisoning, or something that he ate or medication that he took could react badly that could effect the intensity of the alcohol. He shouldnt have driven drunk in the first place, and he would have been better off calling an Uber or waited till the alcohol subsided.

2.One of the main points that Dan made was that people often make irrational decisions because they go with what everyone else says to do. He gave the example of the physician who instead of giving the patient ibuprofen, they recommended the patient for hip replacement, not because it was the best decision, but because that was the “default” option that everyone went. This doesn’t happen to me often, but I do remember one time when it was summer, the AC was on and I was on the way to California with my family. My aunt decided to turn off the AC so the engine wouldn’t work too hard and thought that by turning it off and putting the windows down right away would keep us cool. I knew that wasn’t a good choice because all that did was get rid of the cold air in less than five seconds, so what she should have done was wait until the car became hot again because it would have taken longer for the car to get hot again as suppose to putting the windows down. I should have spoke up and told her the choice she made was irrational because the heat would automatically take over the car as soon as the windows were put down, but since I didn’t want to say anything, I just let her make that choice.
