Perdue Farms is a USDA Verified chicken farm that false advertises the product that they provide to consumers. With our mixed economy of capitalist, who says do what you want, how you want with your business, and socialist, where the government is in control of whatever they feel they need to be in control of, it is easy to see how thing can slip through the cracks of what is ethical and what is not when it comes to business and it’s products to consumers. In the video, Chicken Factory Farmer Speaks Out, the chickens are USDA process verified, meaning the chickens are raised cage free, all vegetarian diet, no animal by-products, no antibiotics ever, and they are humanely raised, (Compassion USA, 2014). In the mix of all the laws and regulations, there is a law referred to as the AG-GAG Laws, where no one can gain entry to a factory farm to record or photograph anything that is taking place on the farm, (Wilson, 2014). This makes it hard for anyone to prove any ethical or moral wrong doing.

The problem that I have is that the chickens are not humanely raised, even though it says they are right on the USDA Verified label. Perdue as a corporation should feel ethically wrong about false advertising their products in order to gain more profits from consumers. Consumers will probably never know the difference, especially with the AG-GAG Laws that are put in place to keep people from discovering the truth. There is also the Wheeler-Lea Act Section 12 that makes it unlawful to disseminate any false advertisement in commerce by any means for the purpose of inducing or which is likely to induce, directly or indirectly, the purchase in commerce of food, drugs, devices, or cosmetics, (Barnes, 1962). Perdue Farms should feel the ethical duty theory to it’s consumer, to not falsely advertise a product that they are delivering to their consumers. One of the key components to the duty theory is the obligation not to bear false witness, in other words, don’t lie, (Fieser, 2015).
