Childcare class question
Effective early childhood teachers use a variety of strategies to help each and every child grow and develop. Teachers need to exhibit decision making regarding what each child needs and find ways to create an environment, provide opportunities, and interact with children to support each child.
Consider the following scenarios:
- Emanuel is an infant who is 9 months old. He is not yet mobile. He sits up, but does not crawl, roll, or scoot. He is an only child, lives with his parents and grandparents, and shows a preference to be held.
- Sofia is a toddler who is 20 months old. At mealtimes at her child care program, she will get up from her chair at the table and want to walk around the room. At home, she eats her meals in a highchair where she does not have the freedom to get up.
- Dylan is a preschooler who has a lot of energy. At naptime, he does not settle down on his cot and can sometimes disrupt the entire classroom’s rest. Even worse, if he does not take a nap, he has a tough afternoon making good choices.

- Your opinion on what the individual child needs to grow and develop and/or experience success.
- An idea for a decision a teacher could make to support that child. As a reminder, decisions have to do with the environment, activities, or interactions a teacher would intentionally provide.
- Your ideas around how a teacher would provide for that child’s individual need while meeting the needs of the rest of the children.
