Project description
The main question to address for Chapter 9 of Going to the Source, “The Meaning of Cherokee Civilization: Newspaper Editorials about Indian Removal,” is the following:
What were the most common public arguments made in newspaper editorials opposing Indian removal, and were they more consistent with or contradictory to one another?
Hint: The most obvious way to set up your response is to compare/contrast the arguments articulated by the two authors of the newspaper editorials included in this chapter: Elias Boudinot and Jeremiah Evarts, and that is a perfectly acceptable way to proceed. It would also be possible, though more challenging, to identify consistent or contradictory arguments within the sets of editorials by Boudinot and Evarts.
