A. Simiarities and Differences between Robinson Crusoe and Pamela?
In today’s recording I identified some continuities between Robinson Crusoe and Pamela and also some ways in which Pamela differs from Robinson Crusoe. I’d love to hear your thoughts… what similarities and differences have you observed so far?
B. Paratextual elements… how important are they?
I spoke some more today about paratextual elements (specifically, Richardson’s title page and his “Preface by the Editor”). Genette argued that we shouldn’t ignore paratextual elements when interpreting literary texts because they add to the text’s meaning. What do you think? Did you read the title page and preface of Pamela? Did you skip over them? If you did read them, did they colour your understanding of the work? What can paratexual elements tell us?
